ASTERRA solutions deliver water and infrastructure intelligence that drives global sustainability and has a laudable impact on Earth. We recently reached the milestone of locating leak number 100,000. When combining all the water leaks found (usually years before they would surface) with our work monitoring infrastructure, the water and energy savings calculated directly to ASTERRA solutions is astounding!

Our work using infrastructure intelligence to contribute to and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is not an accident. ASTERRA is focused on using our solutions to create positive impact in communities and for the climate. We work with intention, and our innovations support those who share the same goals.

Leveraging ASTERRA’s solutions, namely, EarthWorks, Recover, and MasterPlan on the EO Discover platform, decision-makers across the globe have all the intelligence they need to monitor vast areas of land and infrastructures and take positive action in support of SDGs. Plus, all this is right at their fingertips, in real time.

ASTERRA uses space satellite technology to see beneath the surface of the Earth. Using L-Band PolSAR radar, the solutions can ‘see’ under trees, concrete, and asphalt, to locate subsurface moisture. Using fully integrated GIS systems, a map is generated, showing likely leak or infrastructure failure locations. This allows ASTERRA users to identify infrastructure failures before a devastating event occurs or to find leaks often years faster and at least three times more efficiently than traditional boots-on-the-ground methods, preventing wasted water and energy.

Central to the solutions ASTERRA provides is space technology. A report by the International Space Exploration Coordination Group identified several key benefits to using space in support of the SDGs. This report mentions the importance of innovation in research and in technologies and states that leveraging these new capabilities will lower overall costs, share risks, foster innovation, and benefit countries by providing them access to new economies and technologies.

ASTERRA’s research and development teams are always innovating and leveraging their solutions to create greater access, tackle climate change, and to solve some of the most critical problems on Earth. We hold 12 patents for our technology and were named the inaugural winner of the American Water Works Association Innovation Award.

ASTERRA uses Earth observation in relentless pursuit of its mission: to be humanity’s eyes on Earth. This is how we address global challenges, such as those outlined in the SDGs. ASTERRA is adaptive and works to mitigate the negative effects of climate change and unsustainable development of all kinds. Our work involves building trust and facilitating strong relationships between agencies and nations to foster coordination, encourage sustainable solutions, and to build resilience.

Since 733+ million people live in countries with high and critical levels of water stress, SDG number 6 is our mutual effort to support resilience and provide safe, clean water for all. According to the UN, by 2030 1.6 billion people will lack safely managed drinking water. ASTERRA solutions are designed to make sustainable water solutions accessible, efficient, and cost effective.

ASTERRA’s innovative use of space technology for infrastructure is in support of SDG number 9. SDG 9 calls us all to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. EarthWorks supports global infrastructures, roads, commercial development, rail, dams, levees, and mines. ASTERRA is bringing sustainable higher technology to new industries, making them more resilient than their lower technology counterparts. All of this makes the infrastructure of the world safer and more reliable.

SDG number 13 is to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Among the challenges is that energy-related CO2 emissions increased 6% in 2021, reaching the highest level ever. Rising climate temperatures continue unabated, leading to more extreme weather. These extreme weather events, such as wildfires, droughts, and storms, all impact various types of infrastructure and water distribution systems. Leaks and infrastructure failures follow, but ASTERRA prevents these through the pro-active identification and resolution of non-surfacing leaks and infrastructure failures detected using their solutions.
