For global development to be sustainable, potable water is a necessity. Utilis plays a key role in the maintenance and protection of the water supply using data driven solutions. A staggering 7200M gallons of water are saved every year through Utilis solutions, and 3.3 leaks are found per crew per day. Our satellite-based leak detection is positively impacting the sustainable water supply across the globe, but it starts with finding the first leak. Even if we are not yet in your back yard, our Impact Calculator is here, and ready to help.

There are 17 goals set forth by the United Nations, all related to sustainable development around the globe. Utilis provides utilities feedback on three of the goals by providing a method for calculating the impact of water leaks. The Utilis Impact Calculator contributes to the goals of clean water and sanitation, industry, innovation and infrastructure, and climate action.

“Utilis doesn’t just provide a product to our customers, we provide the full solution, which includes helping them lower their environmental impact on the planet,” said Elly Perets, Utilis CEO. “This Impact calculator shows water utilities everywhere the impact they can impart by finding and repairing leaking pipes,”

Let’s take a closer look at what Utilis is doing to contribute to the UN sustainability goals. To ensure access to water and sanitation for all, Utilis helps customers build resiliency and ensure continuous water supply with a service that proactively monitors water systems for leaks before they are visible. Higher efficiency and effectiveness in water leakage reduction means less water is taken from natural reserves, less energy is used to pump and process water that is ultimately lost. Plus, there are associated carbon emissions used to produce that energy. The positive result is more drinking water available to everyone.

In the goal to build a resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation, Utilis provides a solution to customers to monitor their pipe deficiency with the MasterPlan product. Using real sensor data from satellite, a utility can take this information and combine it with pipe attribute data in a risk model. This allows the utility to prioritize their resources for their long-term replacement and management strategy.

Utilis also contributes to the goal of taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Climate change from increasing CO2 is projected to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, and floods. The utilis L-Band SAR analytics helps customers identify leaks so they can be repaired, lowering the excess electricity used to pump and treat the water (as well as the associated CO2).

The problem is truly global. For example, since over 20% of treated water in Europe is lost in distribution systems, and 75% of that can be recovered, there is a significant opportunity to safeguard supplies threatened by climate change. Utilis’ patented algorithm uses SAR sensors onboard contracted satellites to locate probable leaks.

With Utilis’ technical innovation, including the Impact Calculator, we are able to assist both public and private sectors to overcome major water challenges. Since the average leak exists for 18 months (per AWWA), rapid detection and resolution are of critical importance. Any environmental damage can be viewed and addressed. Resolution of leaks save water, CO2 and electricity.
