The adoption of satellite leak detection in South America is a giant leap towards the development of smart cities and the protection of communities against water loss.
San Diego, California, December 5, 2023 – ASTERRA today announced its rapid expansion in Brazil with three new contracts. Together with Nortech , the company’s partner in Brazil, ASTERRA solutions will be used by water and sanitation utilities in Curitiba, Joinville, and São Paulo.

São Paulo, already aligned as a smart and digitally connected city, is on the right track to promote its sustainability goals. The new contract with ASTERRA was signed with the support of Sabesp , the company responsible for supplying water to more than 28 million people and for collecting and treating sewage for more than 25 million people in the 375 municipalities of the state of São Paulo. In addition to ASTERRA solutions, São Paulo leaders have implemented other new technologies to improve accessibility, inclusion, health, and safety. This includes broadband internet, smart traffic lights, computerized buildings, and electronic health records and access to consultations.
In Curitiba, ASTERRA was contracted through Sanepar . The city has implemented numerous smart, digital, and connected city initiatives, including 4 technology centers and 7 business incubators, generating a growing number of new businesses. Curitiba has also invested significantly in infrastructure, mobility, and broadband internet access. Joinville also has the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and contracted ASTERRA’s services through the Joinville Water Company (CAJ). ASTERRA, in partnership with the IDB, has already delivered a surprising 70x return on investment in water leak detection solutions and positive climate impact in five Latin American countries, including Brazil.
The ASTERRA Recover solution is available through EO Discover . The platform efficiently locates potable water leaks and wastewater exfiltration because the entire city’s systems can be monitored and analyzed at once, allowing field teams to repair three times more leaks than are found using traditional methods alone.
