Combating Statewide Water Loss Using Innovative Technology

Through ASTERRA, The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has launched LeakTracer– a first-of-its-kind grant funding program that deploys AI and advanced satellite technology to reduce water loss and strengthen long-term water resilience for rural water utilities state-wide. LeakTracer leverages advanced satellite imaging and artificial intelligence to identify real water loss across distribution networks, covering up to 1400 square miles at one time.

During the first 12 months of the program, 43 utilities have enrolled and 12 utility service areas have been inspected. Out of those 12 service areas, a total of 154 leaks have been found for an estimated total of 514.9 gallons per minute, or 270.6 million gallons per year of water loss reduction so far.

NMED’s LeakTracer program demonstrates the power of combining public leadership with private-sector innovation. By deploying AI-enabled satellite technology at scale, state leaders are not only advancing long-term water conservation goals but also providing critical support to utilities with limited resources. This model highlights how data-driven decision-making and remote sensing can transform traditional infrastructure management, serving as a blueprint for other states and communities seeking innovative, cost-effective solutions to water loss.
